About Me

Its important to have as much information as possible when choosing a therapist to work with you.

Hello! I’m Dr. Melissa Farrell

Licensed Therapist

I am a Licensed Clinical Psychologist specializing in the treatment of Gender and Sexual Minority (LGBTQIA+) clients, particularly youth and families. I graduated with my Doctorate in 2008 after having completed my dissertation in the sensitive treatment of transgender individuals. While there have been many changes in the field, my commitment to providing the best service possible to gender and sexual minority clients remains. Within this population I frequently see individuals and families struggling with anxiety, depression, and trauma as well as other issues related to gender non-conforming or transgender identities such as coming out and transition issues.

My Approach & Values

As humans we each struggle at times with difficult thoughts, feelings, and situations. It is in those times that one can become “stuck” and feel there is no way to move forward. I do my best to help people open up, move toward their values, and be true to themselves.

In order to provide the best treatment possible, I primarily use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. This therapy is focused on helping individuals and families cope with difficult thoughts and feelings in ways that allow them to move toward their values and live full and meaningful lives.

My Experience

Having graduated in 2008 I have more than ten years of experience providing therapy to children, adolescents, adults, and families. Over the years I have worked in inpatient, outpatient, and school settings. This has provided me the opportunity to work with a full spectrum of mental health concerns.

At this point I also use my education, experience, and understanding to provide supervision and training to other professionals in the field.

Everyone has people in their lives that are gay, lesbian or transgender or bisexual. They may not want to admit it, but I guarantee they know somebody.

– Billie Jean King

I think being a teenager is a difficult journey in and of itself, but being transgender makes it that much harder.

– Jazz Jennings

Because you never know when a transgender person is going to come into your life, you need to be prepared, and you need to be ready to help them.
